Background

The Confederation of South African Workers Union [CONSAWU] was launched at a National Congress held at Caesars Conference Centre on 8 March 2003and was attended by more than four hundred delegates and guests from South Africa and various parts of the world. This launch of an independent non-aligned union was in the main funded by our international partners being the CNV [Netherlands] and the CSC [Belgium].

A Convener was elected to coordinate this process: Mr. Henry Hendricks. This coordination laid the foundation for what is now CONSAWU by bringing together a number of unions not affiliated to any confederation who felt the need to form an independent politically non- aligned Confederation. These unions were touched by the continuing casualisation of jobs, outsourcing, poor conditions of service of workers, increasing unemployment, spread of the pandemic and related diseases, global hunger and poverty. They also felt the strong need to speak in one voice and establish both national and international relations to fight against such evils.
